THE CUBA WEBSITE LIST : (9/18/01)
.
Formerly, a website list found @ AfroCubaWeb:
http://afrocubaweb.com
.
.
Sorry, Folks! It’s been ages since I updated this list, and many links may not be current. If anyone wants to systematically try them all and email me a list of the ‘dead links,’ I will be grateful! In 2000, I assembled this list from many others’ helpful suggestions, a list of website addresses of specific interest to CUBA TRAVELERS. The range of topics is extensive, but if you have some exceptional, critically recommended links, please post the address as a ‘Reply’ or email: gotocubanow@hotmail.com
(I am NOT interested in the ANTI-CUBANS or their garbage: hopefully, you won’t see any of their sites featured here.) Please pardon an obvious bias towards English-language sites, and my apologies if any links are out-of-date … I hope this will be useful for your research in the near future: explore each site carefully, many sites are expanding with new pages on different topics … Good Luck surfing ‘Cuba’ on the web!
.
PART ONE: DISCUSSION boards & forums:
.
Lonely Planet’s Thorntree CUBA BRANCH has a few people who will email you info, typical questions from novice travelers, and the occasional boorish diatribes. Read! Then post:

EMERGENCY CASH possibilities for US CITIZENS:
.
Although it is UNRELIABLE and very UNWISE to leave a paper trail of expenses in Cuba, some travelers’ reports indicate a possibility of getting a cash advance on a US credit card at the US Interests Section of the Swiss Embassy, the Canadian Embassy, and sometimes a US MasterCard will work at restaurants and hotels, even though it's issued from a US bank. If you have run out of all your money, and you have a MC, you can go to Transcard, in Cuba, and they can allow a cash withdrawal.
Transcard: Calle 2 No. 302, esq. 3ra. Ave., Miramar, Playa, Ciudad de La Habana, Tel: 244823, 244824
.
Reportedly, you can get a US credit card cash advance – it can be a complicated process, so leave plenty of time. Expect to pay a 10% commission!

INTERNET in Cuba (2000):
Because only 1/10 of Cubans have a telephone, and internet use is prohibitively expensive and somewhat restricted, don’t expect to log-on anywhere except Habana. Though some Cubans may be able to access the web thru work/school accounts, you best bet is to try a local university in larger towns.

PART FOUR: GENERAL INFO & SPECIFIC TOPICS
.
The unofficial Habana SUPERSITE, chock full of links to restaurants, arts, film, shopping, etc. etc. – a massive ‘list of lists’ in English. (For example, the “More Guides” section has an extensive archive of articles on U.S. travelers’ evasion of the hideous, criminal Helms Burton Act.)
