PROLOGUE

Friends- I generally prefer to write stories, mostly truth with a few fictional elements, because I believe that the imagination can improve reality a little, at least when it comes to telling tales. However, this account has a different purpose-simply to document what happened. It might not be as well written as I like- but it is all true.

I'll probably be adding details to this from time to time, because this is a handy place to keep the official record.

My real name is Rick Schwag. I live in Lyndonville, Vermont. Before I got invovled in Cuba I was the
co-founder and co-owner of a small real estate agency, Key Realty, which still exists, altough I'm no longer involved

I first went to Cuba in 1994, just as the first special period was ending. I got to see the tail end of the hundreds of chicas on every block of Varadero, just before that era came to a close. It did make an impression on me!

I didn't get invovled in any type of humanitarian work until after I went back and met my future wife on my second viist. Of course I got to know her family, and
just like most of us here, I learned that even basic stuff like tylenol was unavailable in most of the counry. So when I went back to court my girlfriend, my third trip
to Cuba, I brought over 10 kilos of basic medicine . And I probably felt pretty good about myself!

I remember later when I went on ebay and bought 10 huge 'gusanos', roll up bags that could carry about 100 pounds of medical supplies that a few drug reps would
collect for me. And I remeber thinking that 100 pounds was a huge amount of medicine.

About that time I founded a non profit, based in Vermont, called Caribbean Medical Transport (http://www.cubacaribe.com)
