8000 Kubaner wegen Hurrikans "Katrina" evakuiert

Havanna/Miami (AFP) - Wegen des Hurrikans "Katrina", der auf die Küste der USA zurast, sind in Kuba am Sonntag rund 8000 Menschen evakuiert worden. Die Küstenstadt Surgidero de Batabano südlich von Havanna stand nach einem Bericht des kubanischen Fernsehens fast vollständig unter Wasser. Im Westen Kubas fiel die Stromversorgung weiträumig aus, die Telefonverbindungen waren gekappt. Die Behörden warnten vor hohen Wellen und starken Windböen. Der Hurrikan "Katrina" hatte Spitzengeschwindigkeiten von 282 Stundenkilometern.

Cuba offers minute of silence for Katrina victims

HAVANA, Cuba (Reuters) -- Cuba's parliament, led by President Fidel Castro, set aside politics momentarily on Thursday and stood for one minute in silent homage to the victims of Hurricane Katrina -- before quickly returning to normal business and condemning the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

"The whole world should feel that this tragedy is its own," National Assembly speaker Ricardo Alarcon said.

Heavy rainfall lashed western Cuba and downed power lines when Katrina swung across Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico, but the island escaped the devastation seen in the United States.

"The news pained and saddened Cubans. In their name, we wish to express our profound solidarity with the people of the United States, state and local authorities and the victims of this catastrophe," Alarcon added.

Castro, dressed in his trademark green military fatigues, stood with his head down for the minute of silence.

Alarcon said devastation in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama was the most costly natural disaster in the history of the United States, Communist Cuba's ideological enemy for four decades.

Poor, mainly black Americans were the hardest hit by Katrina in the number of deaths and homes lost, he said.

Kuba und Venezuela bieten USA Hilfe für Hurrikan-Gebiete an

HAVANNA/CARACAS - Angesichts der chaotischen Zustände in den Hurrikan-Gebieten haben die USA Hilfsangebote von ungeliebter Seite bekommen: Die beiden verfeindeten Staaten Kuba und Venezuela erklärten sich zur Entsendung medizinischer Hilfe an.

Der kubanische Staatschef Fidel Castro sagte in einer vom Radio und und Fernsehen übertragenen Ansprache, insgesamt könnten 1100 Ärzte mit 26,4 Tonnen Medikamenten in die USA entsandt werden. Die ersten hundert Mediziner sollten noch am Freitag (Ortszeit) nach Houston im US-Bundesstaat Texas geflogen werden.

Jeweils 500 weitere sollten am Samstag und am Sonntag folgen. "Kuba ist bereit, sofort zu helfen. Wir bieten ganz konkrete Dinge an, Ärzte am Ort der Tragödie, was genau das ist, woran es im Moment fehlt", sagte Castro.

The tiny country of Cuba endured a category 4 storm on July 5 of this year. They evacuated 600,000 people, and suffered only 10 deaths in the storm. When hit by category 5 hurricane, Ivan, in 2004, Cuba evacuated 1.9 million people from vulnerable areas prior to the storm. No Cubans died as a result of the storm.

Cuba's citizens, organized by neighborhood and given civil defense education training, were evacuated with their local medical care providers, so persons needing medical care were known to their doctors and received special assistance and medications. The Cuban government also evacuated residents' TV sets, refrigerators and other valuable items, so no one would remain in a dangerous place for fear of looting.

Cuba, a country of 11.2 million people, has universal free medical care for its citizens, and trains and exports medical doctors and nurses throughout the world to provide free medical services to those in need.

Upon learning of the devastation in the Gulf states last week, Cuba, located 90 miles off the coast of Florida, offered its medical and rescue team services to the U.S. to help with the Katrina disaster, but the Bush Administration refused their offer.

President Bush also refused to allow Canadian search and rescue and medical personnel into the U.S. to assist with Katrina recovery. President Bush himself didn't visit the devastated areas until five days after the storm, having spent the previous four days on vacation and giving political speeches.

Havanna (AFP) - Kuba hat sein Hilfsangebot für die Hurrikan-Gebiete in den USA ausgeweitet. Mittlerweile seien knapp 1600 Ärzte einsatzbereit, sagte Staatschef Fidel Castro am Sonntag in Havanna. Zuvor hatte er den USA Unterstützung durch 1100 kubanische Medizinern angeboten. 48 Stunden nach seinem ersten Angebot habe er aber noch keine Antwort aus Washington erhalten, sagte Castro. "Die Ärzte könnten schon vor Ort sein und sich nützlich machen. Wir werden geduldig so viele Tage wie nötig abwarten." Kuba werde auch 5000 Ärzte entsenden, wenn dies gewünscht werde, sagte der Staatschef des kommunistischen Landes. Er bot zudem an, 36 statt wie bisher 26 Tonnen Hilfsgüter in die Katstrophengebiete zu ...
