Iran's ambassador to Cuba said on Monday that his country decided to boost its ties with the Cuba, 90 miles from Florida, by extending some 20 million in euro credit.

Political and economic ties between the two countries have improved during the recent years – which raises the U.S. concerns.

Washington says that Iran is running a secret nuclear weapons program, a claim Iran has repeatedly denied, asserting that its nuclear program is mainly aimed at generating electricity.

Ahmad Edrian, Iran's ambassador to Cuba has announced plans for more scientific collaboration between the two countries, including plans by Cuba to help Iran build a plant that produces vaccines and medicines.

"There is no doubt that Iran is determined to strengthen its economic relations with Cuba, and there are many interesting areas in which to cooperate," Edrisan told reporters.

He confirmed that economic cooperation between the two nations is to be diversified and extended starting this year.

"In discussions between the delegations, we have made concrete the most propitious areas for economic cooperation and strengthened banking relations," Edrisan said. "The Central Bank of Cuba already has agreements with the Iran Development Bank, which will facilitate trade between the two countries."

Since new oil resources have been found in Cuba, Iran said it will help Cuba in oil pumping developments, Edrisan stated.

Recalling the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro’s visit to Iran four years ago, Edrisan hailed the bilateral relations between the two countries.

"The volume of trade between Cuba and Iran in recent years has ranged between $20 and $30 million, but there is much capacity between the two nations to raise that," the Iranian official said.
